Keep Your Smile Bright and Healthy
Dental Check-Up and Clean in Austral

Why Regular Dental Check-Ups and Cleanings Matter

Who Can Benefit from Regular Check-Ups and Cleanings?
Children and Teens
Routine check-ups track dental development, monitor for early decay, and support habits like brushing and flossing. Preventive treatments like fluoride and sealants are often recommended.
Healthy Adults
Most adults benefit from a check-up every six months. However, those with a history of gum disease, smoking, or health conditions may need more frequent care.
High-Risk Patients
People with frequent plaque build-up, weak enamel, or medical issues like diabetes or dry mouth may need closer dental monitoring and more regular cleans.
Orthodontic Patients
Braces and aligners can make it harder to clean teeth properly. Professional cleans help prevent plaque build-up, gum problems, and white spot lesions.

Benefits of a Professional Dental Check-Up and Clean
Early Detection
Dentists can identify problems, like cavities, gum inflammation, or worn enamel, before you notice symptoms. Early treatment often means less discomfort and lower costs.
Preventive Care
Professional cleans remove plaque and tartar that daily brushing can’t reach. This helps reduce the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.
Oral Cancer Screening
Many check-ups include a quick screening for signs of oral cancer. Detecting changes early may lead to faster diagnosis and better treatment outcomes.
Oral Health Confidence
Knowing your mouth is healthy gives peace of mind. Regular visits also allow time to ask questions and better understand your oral health needs.

Answers to Your Check-Up and Clean Questions
How often should I get my teeth checked?
Why do we need a routine dental check-up?
- Early detection of problems: Many dental conditions, such as tooth decay and gum inflammation, begin without pain or visible signs. A routine check-up allows your dentist to detect these concerns early, which can make them easier to manage.
- Monitoring your oral health over time: By seeing your dentist regularly, it becomes easier to track any changes in your teeth, gums, and bite. This ongoing monitoring helps your dentist notice subtle developments that may not be obvious during daily brushing.
- Professional guidance on home care: Your dentist can assess how well your brushing and flossing habits are working. They can recommend ways to improve your technique or suggest products that may better support your oral hygiene.
- Removal of plaque and tartar build-up: Even with regular brushing, some areas are harder to clean at home. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar, which can only be removed professionally. Regular checkups usually include a clean to address this build-up.
- Lowering the risk of future dental issues: By identifying problems early, your dentist may help reduce the chance of sudden pain, broken teeth, or infections. Early care may reduce the need for more involved treatments, such as root canals or extractions, later on.
- Support for long-term oral health: Routine visits help maintain a clean and healthy mouth. This can support your comfort when eating and speaking and contribute to your overall well-being.
Does a dental check-up include cleaning?
Yes, many dental check-ups include a professional clean. However, your dentist may suggest a different approach depending on your current oral health.
A standard check-up and clean appointment may include the following:
- Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, and soft tissues. They will look for signs of decay, inflammation, or other changes.
- A scale will be performed to remove tartar using hand instruments or ultrasonic tools. This helps clean areas that brushing often misses.
- After scaling, your teeth may be polished with a soft rotating brush and paste. This smooths the surface and helps reduce minor surface stains.
- If suitable, your dentist may apply fluoride. This supports the enamel and can help reduce the risk of future decay.
- If your teeth have heavy build-up or your gums are sensitive, your dentist might recommend a longer appointment or an additional visit to complete the clean.
These steps support preventive care and allow your dentist to address early signs of concern before they become more complex.
What is the difference between a check-up and a cleaning?
A check-up and a cleaning are two different parts of a routine dental visit. Each one serves a specific purpose in supporting your oral health.
Dental check-up
Professional cleaning
This is the part where plaque and tartar are removed from your teeth using special tools. The clean focuses on areas that are difficult to reach with regular brushing and flossing. After the tartar is removed, your teeth are polished to smooth the surfaces and help reduce staining.
Both steps are important. The check-up allows your dentist to monitor your oral health, while the clean helps maintain the condition of your teeth and gums.
What is included in a dental check-up?
A dental check-up includes several steps designed to assess your oral health and identify any early signs of concern.
- Examination of teeth and gums: Your dentist will carefully examine your teeth for signs of decay, cracks, or wear. Additionally, they will check your gums for signs of inflammation, bleeding, or recession.
- Assessment of your bite and jaw: Your dentist may look at how your teeth come together when you bite. They may also check your jaw's movements and look for signs of teeth grinding or clenching.
- Oral cancer screening: As part of the check-up, your dentist may examine the soft tissues in your mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, and roof of the mouth. This is done to check for unusual changes that may need further attention.
- X-rays, if needed: If your dentist needs a closer look between teeth or below the gum line, they may recommend X-rays. These help detect hidden decay, infections, or changes in the bone.
- Discussion of your oral care habits: Your dentist may ask about your brushing and flossing routine. They will offer suggestions if there are areas that need improvement and answer any questions you may have.
How often should you get your teeth cleaned?
Most people benefit from a professional dental clean every six months. This schedule helps remove hardened plaque, known as tartar, which cannot be removed by brushing or flossing at home.
Regular cleans also support gum health by reducing inflammation and maintaining a cleaner mouth. For many patients, this routine care helps lower the chance of gum problems over time.
Some people may need more frequent cleans. This may apply to patients with gum sensitivity, a history of gum concerns, or medical conditions that affect their oral health. Your dentist will assess your needs and let you know how often a clean is recommended for you.
Even if you brush and floss daily, a professional clean is still important. It targets areas that may be hard to reach at home and helps maintain your overall oral health.
Booking an affordable dental check-up in Austral that includes a clean is a convenient way to support ongoing oral health.
How long does a dental cleaning usually take?
A standard dental cleaning usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, although this depends on your oral health and the amount of tartar present.
Here are some factors that may influence the appointment length:
- If there is a moderate to large build-up of tartar, the process may take longer than average.
- If your gums are sensitive, your dentist may spend extra time cleaning gently to maintain comfort.
- Some patients require a longer appointment or two separate visits if extensive cleaning is needed.
Your dentist will explain what to expect based on your oral health status.
How much does a dental check-up and clean cost at Austral Smiles?
At Austral Smiles, a standard check-up and clean costs $190. If your dentist recommends an OPG (a full mouth X-ray), the cost is $220. This includes a dental examination, a professional clean, and fluoride application if it is part of your care.
We also offer a no-gap checkup and clean in Austral for eligible patients with private health cover. To qualify, your health fund must fully cover the service. If it covers only part of the cost, a gap payment may apply.
Before your appointment, we will explain all costs and what is included. This allows you to understand your options and choose what works well for you.
Is teeth cleaning covered by health funds?
Teeth cleaning is usually included in general dental benefits with many private health funds. The amount you can claim depends on your policy and how much of your benefit limit has been used.
At Austral Smiles’ dental clinic near Middleton Grange and Leppington, we offer on-the-spot claiming through HICAPS. This allows your health fund to process your benefit at the time of your visit, and you only pay the remaining balance if required.
We also provide a no-gap checkup and clean for patients whose health fund fully covers the cost of the service. If your fund pays part of the cost, a gap payment will apply.
Since cover differs between health funds, contact your provider before your visit to confirm what’s included.
