What dental services does Austral Smiles offer?
Below is an overview of the services we provide, grouped into general, cosmetic, restorative, orthodontic, and emergency care categories.
General Dentistry
- Dental check-ups and professional cleans: These appointments help monitor your oral health and remove plaque and tartar that cannot be removed through regular brushing.
- Digital X-rays and 3D CT imaging: These imaging tools are used to assess areas that are not visible during a visual examination and assist with accurate diagnosis.
- Tooth-coloured fillings: A common approach used when a tooth has been affected by decay or structural changes aimed at restoring strength and function.
- Tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth removal: In some cases, a tooth may need to be removed. This includes the removal of wisdom teeth if they are causing discomfort or alignment issues.
- Custom mouthguards: Custom mouthguards may be recommended to protect teeth from damage caused by clenching or grinding (bruxism). Your dentist will assess whether this is suitable for your situation.
- Children's dentistry: We provide routine and preventive care for children. Services may be bulk billed through the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) for eligible families.
- Gum health and periodontal assessments: Our team checks for signs of gum inflammation, bleeding, or recession and monitors your gum condition over time.
- Root canal procedures: This treatment is used when the inner part of the tooth, known as the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed. The goal is to remove the affected tissue while preserving the natural tooth structure whenever possible.
Restorative Dentistry
- Dental crowns: A crown covers the visible portion of a tooth that may no longer have sufficient natural structure to remain intact over time.
- Dental bridges: A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the surrounding teeth.
- Full and partial dentures: These removable appliances are designed to replace several or all missing teeth and support everyday functions.
Cosmetic Dentistry and Smile Enhancements
- Porcelain veneers: These are thin shells placed over the front of the teeth to improve their size, shape, or colour.
- Zoom teeth whitening: We offer in-chair and take-home teeth whitening using the Zoom system, which can reduce surface stains. Your dentist will assess your suitability, as some people may experience sensitivity during or after treatment.
Orthodontics
- Clear aligners: We provide orthodontic options using Invisalign®, ClearCorrect®, Angel Aligner™, ClearPath®, and other leading brands. A 3D scan is included in each consultation to support digital smile planning.
Emergency Dental Care
- Urgent dental support: We provide assistance for common urgent concerns such as severe toothache, chipped teeth, broken fillings, mouth ulcers, or loose crowns.
- Same-day appointments: We aim to offer same-day availability for emergencies when possible. Please contact the clinic directly to check for availability.
What dental technologies do you use?
Austral Smiles uses modern dental equipment to enhance the accuracy, safety, and comfort of your care.
- 1. Digital X-rays: These low-radiation X-rays provide images that help us identify problems like decay or infection quickly and safely.
- 2. 3D CT Scans: These are used for detailed treatment planning, especially in complex cases like implants or wisdom teeth.
- 3. Digital Scanners: These allow us to take impressions without traditional moulds, improving comfort and accuracy.
- 4. Intraoral Cameras: These small cameras give us real-time images to show patients what we see and explain their condition clearly.

Do you accept same-day emergency dental appointments in Austral?
What should I do if I have a dental emergency after hours?
If you experience a dental emergency outside of our regular hours, please call (02) 90531997. We’re open until 7 PM on Tuesdays. After-hours appointments may be arranged depending on the nature of the concern. If prompted, leave a message, and a team member will get back to you as soon as possible.
How much does a check-up and clean cost?
A check-up and clean at Austral Smiles is $190, or $220 if an OPG X-ray is included. If you have a health fund, we can process your claim on the spot using HICAPS. We offer no-gap check-ups when your health fund benefit fully covers the service. Our team can confirm this during your visit.
Are there payment plans available?
What does “no gap” mean?
A no-gap appointment means your health fund covers the full cost of the service, and there’s nothing to pay on the day. This often applies to standard check-up and clean visits, depending on your level of dental benefits. We can check your benefits when you visit the clinic.
Does Austral Smiles accept health funds?
Yes. We accept all major Australian health funds and offer HICAPS claiming at the time of your appointment. Please bring your health fund card so we can process it for you at reception.
Are dental implants covered by health funds?
Are prices fixed or do they vary?
What’s included in a dental check-up at Austral Smiles?
A dental check-up includes a full examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth. We look for signs of decay, gum disease, and other concerns.
What should I expect during my first dental visit?
After your consultation, we’ll provide a written treatment plan outlining your recommended care and estimated costs. These may vary depending on the complexity of your treatment and any additional procedures required.
How often should I schedule a dental check-up and clean?
Most people benefit from a dental check-up and clean every six months, which helps maintain healthy teeth and gums while allowing early detection of potential issues. However, the ideal frequency can vary based on your individual oral health needs. After your initial visit, we’ll recommend a personalised schedule that’s right for you.
Why is preventive dental care important even if I’m not in pain?
What types of teeth whitening do you offer?
- 1. Zoom In-Chair Whitening: This option is completed in one appointment at the clinic. A whitening gel is carefully applied to your teeth and activated using a light. This option may be suitable for those wanting results in a shorter timeframe.
- 2. Zoom Take-Home Whitening Kit: This option allows you to whiten your teeth at home over several days or weeks. We provide custom-fitted trays and a whitening gel, along with instructions for safe use.
Both options aim to reduce staining and improve the brightness of your smile. We will explain what to expect from each treatment during your consultation and help you choose the one that aligns with your needs.
What’s the difference between in-chair and take-home whitening?
Both whitening options use Zoom products and are delivered under a dentist’s supervision, but there are a few important differences to consider:
- 1. Where it's done: In-chair whitening is carried out entirely at the clinic. Take-home whitening is completed at home using trays made for your teeth.
- 2. Timing: In-chair whitening is completed in one visit, while take-home whitening works gradually over multiple applications.
- 3. Flexibility: The take-home kit allows you to complete the process at your own pace. In-chair whitening is completed in a single session.
- 4. Sensitivity control: The take-home option allows for slower progression, which can be adjusted based on how your teeth respond.
We’ll go through both options with you in person so you can choose what feels most comfortable for your goals and lifestyle.
Do you offer dental veneers?
Do you offer Invisalign?
Yes. At Austral Smiles, we offer Invisalign along with a range of other clear aligner brands. Clear aligners are custom-made plastic trays that gradually move teeth into better alignment.
Are aligners suitable for teenagers?
How much does a wisdom tooth extraction cost?
At Austral Smiles, wisdom tooth extractions start at $350. The total cost depends on factors such as the position of the tooth and whether any additional imaging or procedures are needed.
How can I tell if I need a dental crown, bridge, or implant?
- 1. Dental crowns are placed over teeth that are worn down, weakened, or have had large fillings. They provide strength and help maintain the shape of the tooth.
- 2. Bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth by attaching an artificial tooth to the neighbouring teeth on either side.
- 3. Dental implants are used to replace missing teeth with a small titanium post placed in the jaw, which holds a crown securely in place.
What does getting a crown involve?
During the second visit, the final crown is placed, and we carefully assess its shape, fit, and bite to confirm comfort and proper function. You’ll receive clear care instructions and support throughout the process.
What are dental implants, and how long do they last?
A dental implant is a long-term replacement for a missing tooth. It consists of a small post embedded in the jawbone, which holds a crown securely in place.
Dental implants are often chosen for their stability and natural look. While they are intended for long-term function, their success and lifespan depend on oral hygiene, bone health, and general well-being. Studies suggest success rates of 90–95% over 10 years when proper care is maintained.
Is my child eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS)?
To be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), your child must meet all of the following criteria:
- Your child must be between 0 and 17 years old for at least one day of the calendar year.
- Your child must be eligible for Medicare on the day the dental service is provided.
- You or your child must receive or be part of a family receiving a relevant Australian government payment, such as Family Tax Benefit Part A.
Eligibility is assessed at the start of each calendar year and remains valid for that full year. If your child becomes eligible partway through the year, Medicare will backdate their eligibility to January 1 of that same year.
- Examinations and check-ups
- X-rays
- Cleaning and fissure sealing
- Fillings
- Root canal treatment

- Partial dentures
Do you bulk bill for children’s dental care?
Yes. Austral Smiles provides bulk billing for children eligible under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This includes general dental services such as check-ups, cleaning, X-rays, and basic restorative care. If your child is eligible under the CDBS and has remaining benefits, we bulk bill all covered services, so you typically won’t have out-of-pocket costs.
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
The first visit is mostly about prevention and education. Your dentist will check how your child’s teeth are developing and offer tips for brushing, diet, and other ways of caring for teeth. Starting early helps children get used to dental visits. It helps build trust and ease anxiety over time, particularly if further treatment is needed in the future.
