How much does a check-up and clean cost?

A check-up and clean at Austral Smiles is $190, or $220 if an OPG X-ray is included. If you have a health fund, we can process your claim on the spot using HICAPS. We offer no-gap check-ups when your health fund benefit fully covers the service. Our team can confirm this during your visit.

Yes. We offer flexible payment options for selected services. You will receive a written treatment plan during your consultation outlining the recommended procedures and costs. Our team will then guide you through available payment arrangements.

A no-gap appointment means your health fund covers the full cost of the service, and there’s nothing to pay on the day. This often applies to standard check-up and clean visits, depending on your level of dental benefits. We can check your benefits when you visit the clinic.

Yes. We accept all major Australian health funds and offer HICAPS claiming at the time of your appointment. Please bring your health fund card so we can process it for you at reception.

Some health funds include dental implants as part of their benefits, while others do not. After your consultation, we will give you a detailed quote to take to your health fund to confirm your plan’s cover.
Prices for some services, such as check-ups and whitening, start at a consistent amount. Prices of other procedures, like implants, crowns, or aligners, depend on your treatment needs. You will receive a full, written quote after your consultation, so you know what to expect before proceeding.

What’s included in a dental check-up at Austral Smiles?

A dental check-up includes a full examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth. We look for signs of decay, gum disease, and other concerns.

If needed, we may recommend digital X-rays to assess areas not visible during the exam. At the end of your visit, we’ll explain our findings, provide a treatment plan and explain any next steps clearly.
Your first visit includes a conversation about your dental history and any current concerns. We then complete a thorough examination of your teeth and gums and may take digital X-rays if required.

After your consultation, we’ll provide a written treatment plan outlining your recommended care and estimated costs. These may vary depending on the complexity of your treatment and any additional procedures required.

Most people benefit from a dental check-up and clean every six months, which helps maintain healthy teeth and gums while allowing early detection of potential issues. However, the ideal frequency can vary based on your individual oral health needs. After your initial visit, we’ll recommend a personalised schedule that’s right for you.

Preventive care helps detect concerns before they become more complex or uncomfortable. Many dental diseases, like decay or gum disease, can progress without noticeable symptoms at first.
Regular visits also help maintain fresher breath, stronger teeth, and overall oral health. Keeping up with preventive care can often reduce the need for more involved procedures in the future.

What types of teeth whitening do you offer?

Austral Smiles offers Zoom professional teeth whitening, with two options available depending on your preference and schedule. Both are provided under the care of our dental team:

Both options aim to reduce staining and improve the brightness of your smile. We will explain what to expect from each treatment during your consultation and help you choose the one that aligns with your needs.

Both whitening options use Zoom products and are delivered under a dentist’s supervision, but there are a few important differences to consider:

We’ll go through both options with you in person so you can choose what feels most comfortable for your goals and lifestyle.

Yes. At Austral Smiles, we offer porcelain veneers to improve the appearance of natural teeth. Veneers are thin ceramic shells that are custom-made to fit over the front surfaces of your teeth. They can enhance the appearance of teeth that are uneven, chipped, discoloured, or worn.
If you’re considering veneers, we will assess your smile and explain the process clearly, including what’s involved and how they are placed.

Do you offer Invisalign?

Yes. At Austral Smiles, we offer Invisalign along with a range of other clear aligner brands. Clear aligners are custom-made plastic trays that gradually move teeth into better alignment.

People often choose this type of orthodontic treatment for its discreet appearance and ease of removal during meals or cleaning. During your consultation, we’ll assess your goals and recommend a clear aligner system that suits your individual needs.
Yes, clear aligners can be an option for teenagers, depending on their dental development and oral health. Compared to traditional metal braces, aligners are removable and often more comfortable for everyday wear.
Some aligner systems also include features designed to help monitor usage and progress. Before starting, we assess whether aligners are appropriate based on your child’s smile and stage of development.

How much does a wisdom tooth extraction cost?

At Austral Smiles, wisdom tooth extractions start at $350. The total cost depends on factors such as the position of the tooth and whether any additional imaging or procedures are needed.

During your consultation, we will assess your wisdom teeth and provide a written quote before moving forward.
Choosing between a dental crown, bridge, or implant depends on your specific dental condition and treatment goals. Each option serves a different purpose in restoring function and appearance:
We’ll assess your needs using digital imaging and discuss which option is most suitable for your concerns and goals.
Getting a crown usually involves two appointments. On the first visit, we prepare the tooth and take a digital scan. A temporary crown is placed while your custom crown is being fabricated.

During the second visit, the final crown is placed, and we carefully assess its shape, fit, and bite to confirm comfort and proper function. You’ll receive clear care instructions and support throughout the process.

A dental implant is a long-term replacement for a missing tooth. It consists of a small post embedded in the jawbone, which holds a crown securely in place.

Dental implants are often chosen for their stability and natural look. While they are intended for long-term function, their success and lifespan depend on oral hygiene, bone health, and general well-being. Studies suggest success rates of 90–95% over 10 years when proper care is maintained.

Is my child eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme (CDBS)?

To be eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), your child must meet all of the following criteria:

Eligibility is assessed at the start of each calendar year and remains valid for that full year. If your child becomes eligible partway through the year, Medicare will backdate their eligibility to January 1 of that same year.

The CDBS covers up to $1,132 in dental care over two consecutive calendar years, with the cap indexed annually. The two-year period begins from the date your child first receives an eligible dental service.
Covered services include:
Orthodontic treatment, cosmetic dental procedures, and hospital-based services are not included under this scheme.

Yes. Austral Smiles provides bulk billing for children eligible under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This includes general dental services such as check-ups, cleaning, X-rays, and basic restorative care. If your child is eligible under the CDBS and has remaining benefits, we bulk bill all covered services, so you typically won’t have out-of-pocket costs.

The Australian Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist by the time their first tooth appears or by 12 months of age. Early dental visits help set the foundation for healthy habits and confidence in the dental chair.

The first visit is mostly about prevention and education. Your dentist will check how your child’s teeth are developing and offer tips for brushing, diet, and other ways of caring for teeth. Starting early helps children get used to dental visits. It helps build trust and ease anxiety over time, particularly if further treatment is needed in the future.
